As premiered on FL Mix #5, download the official mastered version of this funky-ish club banger Proper Villains and I whipped up for Chicago/NYC rap duo Kidz In The Hall. Grab their new album Land Of Make Believe on March 9th!

Check a ton of shots from the last FL over at Last Night’s Party. Loose!

Bubblin’ is one of my favorite forgotten 90s rap songs. It’s also a column on XLR8R that featured Jess Jubilee - check it out!

Oliver Correa took a bunch of great flicks at Flashing Lights on Saturday. See the whole set here, some selects after the jump (I also mixed in some of my own photos from the night - they are the ones that aren’t watermarked HiFiCartel.com). Read More…

This week’s record shouldn’t need any introduction. I ripped this a while back and I’m not sure which mix it is any more, but it’s the one I’ve always played. If you haven’t seen the video before and have 4 minutes to waste, it’s very strange!

New joints, exclusives, and friend favorites. Tracklist after the jump!

The first person to encourage me to learn how to DJ was my friend in college, Jamie Hodge. He recorded under the alias Born Under A Rhyming Planet (B.U.A.R.P.) on Plus 8, but he was just as into rare funk and soul 45s and hip-hop 12s. Jamie also taught me the basics of music production and sampling, and I helped out on this record a little when he was writing it:
Sensorama - Harz (Born Under A Rhyming Planet Remix) (Right Click “Save Target As”)
While we’re at it, here is another standout from that Sensorama remix EP from the always great David Moufang:
Sensorama - Echtzeit (Move D Remix) (Right Click “Save Target As”)

Around 1997, Jamie Hodge introduced me to HIS mentor from when he was getting started in Chicago, Danny Wang. Danny was very generous and gave me all of the Balihu records to date. These have gone on to be much sought-after records by disco and house collectors and DJs, and they are some of my most prized records. I love this one:
Daniel Wang - In The Street (Right Click “Save Target As”)

DJ Ayres reminisces for a FL / Smirnoff vid that Google Alerts just reminded me about.
